Grace & Puppies

grace with pups

UPDATE: Necropsy results identified the highly contagious, untreatable Distemper virus as the culprit that killed all of Grace’s 13 puppies one by one. Now armed with a diagnosis, we made the compassionate decision to send Grace to be with her puppies & spare her from the inevitable suffering caused by this virus.

PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING IN MEMORY OF GRACE & HER PUPPIES TO HELP US OFFSET THE $1147 IN VETERINARY EXPENSES TO HELP US STAY WITHIN BUDGET SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO HELP MORE PETS IN NEED.

A couple of weeks ago, a family was tearing down an old barn with a rented Bobcat when they discovered a mama Coonhound with a litter of 13 newborn puppies underneath it. Mama was scared but never offered so much as a grumble to volunteers who corralled her and the puppies to bring them to safety. She likely knew we were there to help. Unfortunately, 6 of her babies were dead on arrival – one of them was fading quickly & died later than night.

The mama, now named Grace, & her remaining 7 puppies were moved to a Humane Society foster home. In the coming days, we lost 2 more puppies & after a trip to the vet, we were told that Grace’s milk was tainted & she was likely passing a virus on to her puppies & causing them to die. Grace also tested positive for heartworms & Ehrlichia, a tick-borne disease.

Grace’s puppies, still less than a week old, were moved to a separate foster home so they could be bottle fed & monitored around the clock… but despite a half-dozen vet visits, multiple tests, and relentless efforts to sustain their body temperatures & feedings… one by one we lost them… every one of them.  Several of us in the animal rescue community are still mourning today as we await necropsy results from one of the puppies in hopes of finding out WHY, which we hope will help us to save Grace’s life.

We invested $1,147 trying to Grace & her babies, which has put us WAY over budget on our foster program expenses, and we do NOT want to have to deny help to another animal in need due to s shortage of foster funds.

PLEASE consider making a donation in memory of Grace & her puppies and in honor of Grace’s courage to let us help her.
